Bi-weekly tips, habits, and practice guide for building a better back—improving poor posture that is making you look (& feel) old.

Hello!

If it’s not obvious already, Pilates is a HUGE passion of mine.

I was introduced to the method nearly 25 years ago after a horse-riding accident in 2001 left me with several broken vertebrae in my low back. It was a difficult experience, but it taught me so much about the body, healing, and the value of learning how to move well.

Most of all, it introduced me to Pilates and for that, I’ll always be grateful.

The longer I study and practice Pilates, the more convinced I become of this one truth: Pilates is one of the best ways to age well. It helps you move better, feel better, improve posture, strengthen and stabilize your deep core, and move through life with more ease and confidence.

The 5 Fundamentals You’ll Learn

1. Lengthen and Decompress Your Spine

Most people compress their spine all day - sitting, slumping, hunching over screens, and standing with poor alignment. In this workshop, you'll learn how to create more space through your spine to relieve pressure, support better posture, and reduce unnecessary back strain.

2. Articulate Your Spine "Bone-by-Bone"

Your spine has 24 movable vertebrae and is designed to move segment by segment, not one stiff block. Learning to articulate each vertebra helps restore mobility, improve posture, and reduce the wear and tear that comes from moving with tension and rigidity. This is one of the keys to a healthier, more youthful spine.

3. Find and Connect to Your Deep Core Muscles

Your deep core, including your TVA, acts like an inner corset. When it's working well, your spine feels more supported, your posture improves, and movement becomes more efficient. You'll learn how to find these muscles, feel them working, and connect to them with more confidence.

4. Strengthen and Open Your Hips and Legs

Tight hips and weak legs often contribute to low back discomfort and poor stability. You’ll practice exercises that help open the front of the hips, strengthen the glutes, and build a stronger, more supportive lower body foundation.

  1. Challenge Your Balance

Balance declines with age, but it can absolutely be trained. You’ll practice simple beginning balance exercises that wake up your stabilizer muscles, improve body awareness, and help you feel steadier and more secure on your feet.

Why Fundamentals Matter More Than Advanced Exercises

One of the biggest misunderstandings about Pilates is that results come from fancy equipment, advanced choreography, or harder moves.

But the truth is, the fundamentals are where the real magic happens.

When you learn how to decompress your spine, articulate bone-by-bone, and connect to your deep core, your body starts to move the way it was designed to move. Pain often decreases. Posture improves. Movement becomes smoother. Everyday activities become easier.

And perhaps most importantly, you build a practice you can return to again and again - one that supports your body for the long haul.

WORTH KNOWING

Why "Bone-by-Bone" Changes Everything

A lot of people move their spine like a board, as one rigid unit - stiff, braced, and all in one piece. They bend, hinge, round, or arch without much control through each segment of the back.

One of the most valuable things Pilates teaches is how to articulate the spine bone-by-bone. When each vertebra begins to move more efficiently, you create better mobility, ease compression, and support a healthier, more resilient back.

It may sound simple, but this one skill can change the way your body feels in everyday life. It helps create flexibility, control, and support while protecting your back from unnecessary strain.
