Bi-weekly tips, habits, and practice guide for building a better back—improving poor posture that is making you look (& feel) older.

GOOD AFTERNOON!

If your posture feels off, your hips ache, or your back tightens by 3pm... your feet may be the hidden culprit.

Neglect your feet, and everything up the chain suffers. Strengthen them, and movement becomes youthful again. Today we’re talking about the foundation you’ve been ignoring.

This newsletter is for anyone who loves Pilates—including those scrappy exercisers curious about how to keep a youthful, pain-free, strong back, body, and powerful inner core.

CORE MOVES

How Your Feet Determine Everything Above Them

Your feet are your body's contact point with the ground. Every step you take, every time you stand, your feet send information up the kinetic chain about how to organize your entire body.

Here's what your feet control:

1. Alignment: Collapsed arches (flat feet) cause your knees to rotate inward, which tilts your pelvis forward and exaggerates the curve in your lower back. Your whole spine compensates for what's happening at your feet.

2. Gait: Weak feet can't properly push off with each step, so you shuffle or drag your feet. This creates inefficient movement patterns that waste energy and accelerate wear and tear on your joints.

3. Hip Mechanics: Your feet dictate hip position. If your feet roll inward (pronation), your hips rotate internally. If they roll outward (supination), your hips externally rotate. Either way, your glutes can't fire properly.

4. Low Back Load: When your feet can't absorb shock, that impact travels straight up your legs into your spine. Your lower back becomes the shock absorber it was never meant to be.

Bottom line: Fix your feet, and you fix the foundation. Ignore them, and you’re building your posture on sand.

INNER SHIFT

From Ignored to Essential: Rethinking Your Foundation

Most people only think about their feet when something goes wrong - plantar fasciitis, bunions, hammer toes, chronic pain. We treat feet like an afterthought.

Here's your mindset shift: Your feet aren't just for walking. They're the foundation of how you stand, how you move, and how well you age.

Strong, mobile feet mean better balance, more stable ankles, healthier knees, pain-free hips, and a supported spine. Weak, stiff feet create compensation patterns that steal your energy and age you faster than you realize.

When you invest in your feet, you’re not just preventing foot pain. You’re preserving effortless movement for decades to come.

RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT

Simple Tools for Stronger Feet

You don't need fancy equipment to strengthen your feet. Here's what I recommend:

Tennis ball or small massage ball: Regularly roll out the bottom of your feet to release fascia. Pick one day per week and make it your “Feet Focus” ritual.

Stand and Lift your Heels 10x: Strengthens your arches and improve ankle mobility

Your bare feet: Walk barefoot at home whenever possible to wake up intrinsic foot muscles.

We’re working on creating an online course from this workshop that focuses on simple and basic foot care routines - Stay tuned!!

WORTH KNOWING

The Foot-Balance Connection

As a certifiable Anatomy Nerd 🤓 - I love to share interesting anatomy facts with my clients & classes:

Our feet contain 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, your feet come equipped with a built-in GPS system. And here’s why my Anatomy Nerdy heart gets excited… your feet are loaded with tiny sensory receptors that act like your balance radar - constantly updating your brain where you are in space so you can move with confidence and control.

Your feet aren’t just passive platforms. They are intelligent, responsive foundations and when they’re strong and awake, everything above them works better!

Strong feet. Strong Posture. Strong future.

❓Quick question for you: Do your feet every feel stiff, weak, or tired by the end of the day? Hit reply and tell me.
