Building Better Posture from the Ground Up • Issue 3 of 4

Last time, we talked about what happens when our feet start to complain. Today, we're going one layer deeper - to the structure quietly managing every step you take:

Your arches.

Think of your arch like a spring.

When your foot meets the ground, that spring needs to give a little to help absorb the forces of walking. Then, as you move forward, your foot needs to become stable again so you can push off into your next step.

Too much collapse and you may lose stability. Too much rigidity and you may lose shock absorption.

And remember: your feet are the foundation of your posture.

So today we're looking at the foundation within the foundation - and figuring out what your arches are actually doing.

FEET FIRST

Flat, High, or Somewhere in Between?

We tend to think of arches as simply flat, normal, or high. But what's more important than what your foot looks like is how it behaves when you put weight on it.

A lower or flatter arch - often called pes planus - has more contact with the ground. Some feet also over pronate, meaning they roll inward excessively during weight-bearing. Pronation itself isn't bad; it's a normal part of how the foot adapts and absorbs force. The issue is when the foot has difficulty controlling that motion or becoming stable again for push-off.

At the other end is a high arch, or pes cavus. Less of the middle foot contacts the ground, so pressure may concentrate more heavily at the heel and ball of the foot. A high-arched foot can also be more rigid, making it less adaptable to the surface beneath you.

And then there's the important part:

Neither flat nor high automatically means "bad."

A foot can look one way and function another.

The goal isn't the perfect-looking arch.

The goal is a foot that can adapt, support you, and move.

Look at where the foot contacts the ground. A lower arch creates more contact through the midfoot - but appearance alone doesn't tell us how well that foot functions.

INNER SHIFT

Your Feet Need More Than One Thing

Here's where I want to challenge the idea of finding one magical "foot exercise."

Your feet don't just need to be strong.

They need to be mobile, strong, coordinated and responsive.

They need enough mobility to adapt when you step onto uneven ground. Enough strength to support your arches. Enough sensory awareness to know where you are in space. And enough coordination to transition from a flexible shock absorber into a stable platform for your next step.

That's why we're not trying to force every foot into some imaginary "perfect" shape.

We're learning to help your feet work better.

It's the same philosophy I use throughout the Peak Posture System™:

Find it. Feel it. Move it.

Because you can't change what you can't first feel.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Your Arch Doesn't Stop at Your Ankle

Here's where feet become a posture story.

Stand up and deliberately let your arches collapse inward for a moment. Notice what happens above them.

Your ankles may roll inward.

Your knees may follow.

Your thighs may rotate.

Your hips and pelvis may adjust.

And your body has to organize itself around all of it.

Now imagine repeating a similar movement pattern step after step, year after year.

That doesn't mean your arches are responsible for every knee, hip, or back problem. The body is much more complicated than that. But your feet are your first point of contact with the ground, and the way they manage force can influence movement farther up the chain.

That's why better posture isn't only about pulling your shoulders back.

Posture begins with how you meet the ground.

And now we've come full circle.

We started by discovering your foot shape.

Then we explored common foot complaints.

Today we're looking at arch structure and function.

Next time, we finally put it all into practice.

TRY THIS THIS WEEK

The Footprint Test - Part Two

Remember that footprint you made in Issue 1?

Pull it back out.

A footprint with a broad connection between the heel and forefoot generally suggests a lower arch. A narrow connection - or almost no imprint along the inside of the midfoot - suggests a higher arch.

But now I want you to add another experiment.

Stand barefoot and look at your arch. Then slowly rise onto your toes.

Does your arch change?

Try both feet.

You aren't diagnosing anything here. You're simply becoming a better observer of how your feet respond when you move.

And don't be surprised if your two feet aren't identical. Most bodies aren't perfectly symmetrical.

WORTH KNOWING

You Actually Have THREE Arches

Here's something most people don't realize:

We talk about "the arch" as though there's only one.

Your foot actually has three arches: the medial longitudinal arch along the inside, the lateral longitudinal arch along the outside, and a transverse arch running across the forefoot.

Together, they create a three-dimensional support system designed to adapt, absorb and propel.

Your foot isn't a block.

It's an incredibly sophisticated moving structure.
